Mission Direct - Volunteers helping the world's poor

Achievements so far

“I've seen Jesus going into the slums and entering the houses bringing kindness, love, clothes, and food … I saw Jesus hugging the children and dropping tears for their suffering”Andre Chagas, Brazil talking about Mission Direct volunteers
Mission Direct works on a collaborative project called Open Hands, which re-houses families living in Brazil's worst slums or 'favelas'.

We have now completed 12 houses for the project in Campo Largo, Southern Brazil. So far 48 people are now out of the slums and living in well-built homes.

Open Hands for Brazil

The Open Hands Project works to offer proper houses to some of Brazil's many favela or slum dwellers in the southern Campo Largo region. Families are re-housed in a new community. The local council has donated several acres of land to the project and connects water, sanitation and electricity each time a house is completed. The local church offers vocational and life-skills training for the families as they embark on their new lives. This is not just bricks and mortar: this is a whole new life for Brazil's poorest - in keeping with the project's ethos: 'Taking the individual out of the slum, and the slum out of the individual'.

Our Involvement:

Mission Direct has been involved from the start of this project. It is working with local churches, the church organisation ABBA Social Promotion, along with the local authorities. We have signed a contract to build fifty houses, with project founder Samuel Santos as the master builder.

Outcomes:

- 15 houses have so far been completed. This means that 48 people have a completely new start in life.
- Mission Direct has bought a house for two Church workers to teach the children craft skills, music and literacy support. The house also operates as a worship centre.
- A church home group has been started with oversight from a local Pastor.

- The evangelistic 'Jesus' film is shown in the village to large crowds every Easter.

.
- Volunteers have provided beds and mattresses for some of the neediest families, along with food packs.

All About Mission Direct

Mission Direct gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things around the world. In two weeks you will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. You can help to build a house, classroom or clinic. We discover people and groups doing remarkable things in their own countries. Then we provide them the people and resources that they need. We do this by enabling people like you, with two or more weeks to join our life-altering trips.

Become a voice for the outcast

Brazil is a country of shocking extremes. It is famous for its opulent beaches, and glamorous nightlife and carnival. But just a few miles from the tourist hot spots there is another hidden Brazil. Brazil's slums or ‘favelas’ are places of shocking poverty and decay. Many homes built of little more of trash.

Crime and disease are rife – it can be a frightening, hopeless existence. This is a Brazil that few holidaying Westerners ever get to see, and that many wealthier Brazilians choose to ignore completely.
