Mission Direct - Volunteers helping the world's poor

What you'll be doing

In 2010

You will be building new accommodation for the City of Rest Drug Rehabilitation and Psychiatric Outreach Centre based just outside the capital Freetown. Currently their accommodation is dark, run down cramped and unhealthy. The new premises will be brighter and far more spacious. It will offer far more humanity to people who have often suffered beyond most people’s imagining them. You are giving them a true place of healing.

Previous volunteers have helped to build a security wall around the newly donated three acres of land. We will be building a chicken coop, the kitchen and the first accommodation block. This is proper building work, digging foundations, making and laying the blocks, fixing the roof and painting the walls.

In your free time you have the chance to experience an Africa that is far off the tourist trails. You can sample barbecued barracuda on the stunning unspoiled Burah Beach. You will also experience a trip of a lifetime to an unspoiled virgin rainforest.

Healing for a wounded people

Whether you are wedging yourself in next to a woman with a chicken under each arm on the packed and noisy Freetown ferry, or listening to victims of the Civil War at the City of Rest drug rehabilitation centre, a trip to Sierra Leone will challenge and transform you. But just as important; the opportunities that you will have to change the lives and the circumstances of the people you meet are immense.

Sierra Leone is officially the World’s poorest nation. It is in recovery after a brutal civil war. But it is now safe and stable with a democratic government. However the people long for healing and restoration. Come with Mission Direct and become part of the healing process.
