Mission Direct - Volunteers helping the world's poor

What you'll be doing

In 2010

Our focus in Uganda continues to be children, young people and education. The youngest generations must not lose their chance of a stable, happy prosperous future because of what Uganda has suffered in the past.

There are many Ugandans ready to care, educate and train a new generation. But they need the resources and infrastructure to do their work properly. You will be helping to provide this, and leaving a generation with a lasting legacy.

In 2010 we will be Working with three projects:

2010_pic_smallModern Primary School, Rukungiri

We will be working on a Nursery School which was nearly forced to close due to lack of proper accommodation. You will be there to finish the work, putting in internal fixtures and fittings. Then you can see the children settle in, the moment paintbrushes are put away!

Mothers Union Vocational Training Centre

The training centre has been running for many years now, and offers vocational courses for young women unable to afford Higher Education after leaving school. It offers practical skills such as dress-making and typing that will be of use in the workplace, but also serve them well in the home.

You will be completing work on a series of dormitories for the project, which had previously been abandoned. Your work will allow many women to attend class who live too far from the centre to walk there every day. The dormitories’ completion will also free further space for classrooms, allowing an extra 50 students to attend and train for a better future.

Kumi Housing Project

Mission Direct is working with the charity COHAD, to build forty homes for orphans of AIDS and civil war. Each home will house ten children and be tended to by a local widow who acts as ‘house mother’. She provides food, Education, healthcare and nurture – giving them back some semblance of family life that they long for desperately.

Off Duty for Swim ‘n’ Safari

During the free time you will visit a National Park and wind down with a short safari. So, pack your camera and get ready to spot lions, elephants, hippos and water buffalos.

Don’t worry – be happy!

"I think I will be more grateful and happier now" - Uganda volunteer

When we ask our volunteers what they have learned from their time in Uganda, they say things like ‘to be happy and enjoy life’. Time and again, volunteers return transformed by the warmth and upbeat natures of Ugandans, in spite of their circumstances.
