A Mission Direct volunteer has given a five year old child a new lease of life. Sheila Stevenson, a stoma care nurse from Blackpool is sending Junior the medical supplies he needs to be able to go to school.
Sheila was in Uganda with Mission Direct Medical Missions, teaching healthcare to young children. She met Junior and his mother while visiting a disabled children’s clinic. Although only five years old, Junior was fitted with a colostomy bag. His mother told Sheila that they did not have sufficient money to change the bags regularly. Each bag had to be washed and replaced at least four times.
“There was no prospect of Junior going to school with a bag that leaked and smelt” explained Sheila. As this was my area of expertise, I was able to give them all the advice I could, but they desperately needed a regular supply of bags.”
Returning to England, she approached to companies for help. Junior is now sent a regular supply of bags. Sheila has stayed in touch with the family and reports that “Junior is now a very happy little boy, thoroughly enjoying being at school.”

Mission Direct gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things around the world. In two weeks you will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. You can help to build a house, classroom or clinic. We discover people and groups doing remarkable things in their own countries. Then we provide them the people and resources that they need. We do this by enabling people like you, with two or more weeks to join our life-altering trips.
