Our volunteers broaden a Ugandan school's catchment area with bikes

Volunteers bought an extra gift for a local school:
twenty bicycles. The bikes will spare children a gruelling walk, making regular schooling a possibility.

Isaac the head of St Martin Secondary School explained to team leaders Sarah and Brian Bradbeer that some of the girls were dropping out due to the huge distances they needed to walk.

“Girls were walking for hours every day along the red earth pathways. They were getting harassment and abuse on the way,” said Sarah. “Many of them just gave up on any sort of education and went to work in the fields.”

The Bradbeers put the message out to the volunteer teams. A keen cyclist in Team 1 got the ball rolling and the first 12 bikes were soon paid for, followed by a further eight.

That just left the small matter of transporting 20 bikes along 10 miles of dirt road to the school. “Despite having been in Uganda for 3 months we still could not believe you could fit 20 bikes onto the builders’ pick up” said Bryan. “How wrong we were!”

All About Mission Direct

Mission Direct gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things around the world. In two weeks you will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. You can help to build a house, classroom or clinic. We discover people and groups doing remarkable things in their own countries. Then we provide them the people and resources that they need. We do this by enabling people like you, with two or more weeks to join our life-altering trips.
