A Mission Direct volunteer was so inspired by his trip to Sierra Leone that he decided to propose to his girlfriend on a beautiful windswept beach … by text message.
James Bunston who works as an HGV driver in Glamorgan took the plunge on the scenic Burrah Beach after a week on the volunteer trip.
“The place and the people just did something to me. I felt that I was part of a real team. The whole trip made me think about my priorities – what’s important and what’s not. I realised I was missing Tracy and that told me all I needed to know.”
His original plan was to phone her “But I couldn’t get a signal at all. Trust me to pick Orange – the one network that doesn’t have.” So plan B was a simple text composed on the spot “I just said ‘I’ve realised that I’m really missing you and don’t want to be apart from you. Will you marry me?’”
Tracy rang fellow team member Shirley Frazer to say “I do” in floods of tears.
“Some of my friends have been saying ‘you did what?’ but actually she thought it was very romantic and that’s all that matters to me”
Having had the epiphany on a scenic beach they are planning to wed in a similar setting “We’re looking for somewhere beautiful with just a few nearest and dearest – right now we’re considering Hawaii”
Mission Direct gives ordinary people the chance to do extraordinary things around the world. In two weeks you will change the lives of some of the world’s poorest people. You can help to build a house, classroom or clinic. We discover people and groups doing remarkable things in their own countries. Then we provide them the people and resources that they need. We do this by enabling people like you, with two or more weeks to join our life-altering trips.
