Love your neighbour - teach them English!

The Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ has been brought into South East Asia in the last two hundred years. Its impact has been significant, even though Christianity still remains a minority religion.

We give thanks to God that today, there is virtually no country in South East Asia without any Christian presence.

In many of these countries, indigenous Christians are proclaiming the Gospel to their own peoples. God, by His grace is raising up 21st Century Asian disciples to complete the task of world evangelisation. These are the new emerging leaders of church planting teams for ministry in South East Asia. They can do with helpers, as in Acts 13:5b (“John was with them as their helper”). This means Christians coming from other parts of the world to add strength to their ministries. Added to this, English is fast becoming the language of choice in South East Asia.We need to ride upon this development. The English language today may have the same Kingdom significance as Greek in the First Century.

Whilst missionaries are not likely to be granted visas easily, the problem does not apply when people come in as English language teachers. A red carpet may be rolled out for them! This is a unique opportunity. Whilst we cannot create waves, we must be able to recognise waves and ride upon them when God sends them. The opportunity to teach English is divinely gifted for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ to ride upon, for the sake of the Gospel proclamation.

Rev Canon Kuan Kim Seng, Director of Missions in the Diocese of Singapore, endorses Gospel opportunities that teaching English can bring. “One concrete way for Christians to witness to a person and demonstrate the love of the Lord Jesus Christ is by teaching the English language to the countless people in many parts of the non-Western world who may otherwise never meet a Christian in their entire life!”
