Gonzalo Alvarez (GAL)

Short-term Project Partner:
Cuba para Cristo (Cuba for Christ), Cuba / UK

What is Gonzalo Alvarez doing?

Gonzalo Alvarez is a 38 year old Chilean, married to Esther, a British citizen. Ordained in 2005 following three years study at Oak Hill Theological College (London), until recently Gonzalo and Esther have been living in Concon, Chile where they have led a church planting project.

Now based in the UK, Gonzalo is coordinating Moore College correspondence courses for Cuban church leaders. These courses seek to give an understanding of exegetical skills, Biblical theology and an on-going knowledge of the Bible as participants work through up to 18 modules. Although most of the teaching on these courses will be given by visiting lecturers, Gonzalo will play a key role in organising the conferences, preparing the students with trial questions and directing their reading.

These Moore College courses will be run through Cuba para Cristo (Cuba for Christ) , an organisation that seeks to support Cuban churches by funding pastors, arranging Bible teaching conferences, providing books and other resources and translating and publishing Christian literature.

Objectives

Over the next three years, it is hoped that the Lord will have enabled the following to be achieved through this initiative:

  • To establish a series of local ‘hubs’ across the country where Moore College courses are taught to pastors who will in turn teach others.

  • Cuba para Cristo is working with two denominations containing approximately 400 pastors. However there are over 1,000 house churches usually led by people with no training. CpC would love to give them the opportunity to receive some training.

  • To help Cuban church leaders, and in turn their members, to grow in their knowledge and love of Christ by teaching them how to teach the Bible.

Costs involved

Crosslinks has agreed funding of £3000pa for Gonzalo. This covers three of his yearly trips to Cuba, and we’d love to be able to commit more money to him.
