Statement from Crosslinks on Human Sexuality (GC/553)

The Crosslinks’ Basis of the Society states its:

Belief that the Canonical Books of the Old and New Testament are wholly trustworthy, historically as well as in matters of faith and doctrine; that such Scripture is the unerring Revelation of God, the one Rule of Faith, and the final Court of Appeal.

In the current Anglican Communion crisis over issues of human sexuality and because the issue is so serious, touching as it does on eternal salvation, Crosslinks’ General Council and Leadership Team affirm:

1. Its solidarity with all who desire to lead a godly life, in obedience to the scriptural teaching that sexual relations are intended by God only within lifelong, monogamous, heterosexual marriage

2. Its support for all who adhere to such Scriptural teaching, particularly those who are suffering as a result of their faithfulness. We call upon the family of Crosslinks to pray for them and for all in positions of leadership at this time.

3. Its agreement with the 1998 Lambeth Conference. Resolution 1:10 on human sexuality (appended below).

4. Its employment, as staff or mission partners, of only those who are in full agreement with this scriptural understanding.

5. Its agreement with the scriptural teaching found in Genesis Chapter 1 Verse 27 (and as set out in Genesis Chapter 2, and as quoted, endorsed and applied by Jesus in Matthew 19:4-6) that in the creative process God differentiated between men and women and that creative process is complete and not the subject of re-allocation. This is the biblical doctrine to which Crosslinks as a member of the Anglican Communion subscribes. Accordingly, in order to comply with this doctrine, and because of the nature of the employment and context in which it is carried out either at home or overseas, in order to avoid conflicting with the strongly held religious convictions of members of Crosslinks, it will be inappropriate to appoint as staff or mission partners those who are undergoing or have undergone gender reassignment. 14/03/2006

Lambeth Conference 1998
Resolution I.10
Human Sexuality

This Conference:
(a) commends to the Church the subsection report on human sexuality;
(b) in view of the teaching of Scripture, upholds faithfulness in marriage between a man and a woman in lifelong union, and believes that abstinence is right for those who are not called to marriage;
(c) recognises that there are among us persons who experience themselves as having a homosexual orientation. Many of these are members of the Church and are seeking the pastoral care, moral direction of the Church, and God's transforming power for the living of their lives and the ordering of relationships. We commit ourselves to listen to the experience of homosexual persons and we wish to assure them that they are loved by God and that all baptised, believing and faithful persons, regardless of sexual orientation, are full members of the Body of Christ;
(d) while rejecting homosexual practice as incompatible with Scripture, calls on all our people to minister pastorally and sensitively to all irrespective of sexual orientation and to condemn irrational fear of homosexuals, violence within marriage and any trivialisation and commercialisation of sex;
(e) cannot advise the legitimising or blessing of same sex unions nor ordaining those involved in same gender unions;
(f) requests the Primates and the ACC to establish a means of monitoring the work done on the subject of human sexuality in the Communion and to share statements and resources among us;
(g) notes the significance of the Kuala Lumpur Statement on Human Sexuality and the concerns expressed in resolutions IV.26, V.1, V.10, V.23 and V.35 on the authority of Scripture in matters of marriage and sexuality and asks the Primates and the ACC to include them in their monitoring process.

Note: The resolutions referred to in subsection (g) of this resolution are set out in the appendix to this document.
